Xpadder is a small and simple Windows application that lets you make the most of your gamepad – and it is free!Xpadder has several features. The most basic is that it lets you map keys to your gamepad buttons. I decided to make a tutorial here to connect with the emulator guides. Some obvious uses of Xpadder in this context:
*Pc Key Mapper Tool
*Pc Controller Keymapper
*Keymapper For Pc
*Pc Key Mapper
*Some emulators that don’t support gamepads natively
*Some emulators that don’t let you redefine the gamepad commands freely (use keys, and remap them any way you want)
*Use it to map function keys from emulators to extra buttons (e.g. you can map load and save state to shoulder buttons in Genesis games for “quick load” and “quick save”)
Xpadder also lets you map mouse commands to your pad, or map sequences of keys to a single button press. I leave it to you to devise your own uses for these. Personally I’ve been happy to use solely the basic feature; I have used it a lot with freeware windows games that typically don’t support pads natively, and with WinUAE, the Amiga emulator – many Amiga games use keys as the standard joysticks only had one button, and it’s very inconvenient to access these keys when using gamepads (Amiga joysticks were often 1-handed, while pads are 2-handed).
Key Mapper is a Windows program that facilitates creating your own custom keyboard maps. The program is freeware, and there is both an install setup and a standalone EXE. You can use the program as often and as much as you like at no cost. My keyboard mapping is set for United Kingdom (English) but every now and again for some reason it changes to something else and causes two characters to change positions. Those are the @ and “ I have tried looking on the web for keyboard mapping on Windows 10 but most of the answers are for Windows 8. If you wish your keyboard's keys were laid out just a tad bit differently, you can change it around with a keyboard remapper. Windows users have a few to choose from, but the easiest to use is.The tutorialStep 1: Download Xpadder
Go to the official site in the download section, or click here [if we host it] to get it instantly.Step 2: Extract Xpadder
It’s very simple. Just unzip it where you want to keep the program. It is a single, small file, no installation required. I advise you to make a folder for it though, so you can easily keep your saved profiles.Step 3: Setup your gamepad(s) – the layout
Run Xpadder by double clicking on it.
You need to configure your gamepad first. Click “New” to do so; you are taken to the Controller editor:
If you want, you can add a picture in the profile – in the “Image” tab, click open and choose what you want:
There are some such images already prepared in Xpadder’s official site, in the Images section (you might want to check if your gamepad is already there – apparently Xpadder treats that pink color as transparent).
Go into the next tabs to configure the thumbsticks. Unfortunately I cannot test this as my gamepad is digital only. It should be almost as easy as doing the d-pad buttons, in the “Direction pad” tab:
Just check the “Enabled” box (as in the image) and the program will detect and prompt you to press the directions in turn.
You may want to move the directional pad to another location (particularly if you have used an image) – just drag and drop:
Adding buttons is also very simple. Pressing the buttons on your gamepad makes them appear in the layout:
This should make it clear why it is helpful to reproduce the layout of your pad – although you can remind yourself what corresponds to each pad button by pressing it on the pad (this is why the last button on the right is different in the image above). Like with the d-pad, you can drag and drop each “button” in the layout at your will:
If your pad has analog trigger buttons, the last tab is for that. My pad only has digital triggers, so I needed to add them already (the two top squares).
You can repeat the process for other pads, if you have them, and save to separate controller profiles, switching between them as desired.Step 4: Setup your profile(s)
With a layout open (See Step 3), assign keys to your pad’s buttons by clicking the corresponding “button” in the profile (e.g. the “up” of the d-pad); an on-screen keyboard pops up:
Then, just press the desired key (e.g. the “up” cursor key) on the on-screen keyboard:
You can remove assignments by clicking the large “NONE” key of the on-screen keyboard:
The right-most part of the on-screen “keyboard” serves to assign mouse movements to your gamepad – in exactly the same way.Step 5: Save the assignments for ease of use
Done with all the assignments for a particular profile? Save the profile so you don’t have to do it next time:
To access them again you can go to “Open” in the menu shown above. You can also quickly and easily swap between profiles you have prepared by clicking the profile line:
That is pretty much all I wanted to cover with this tutorial. Go download and try this wonderful application (if you really like it, you can drop an e-mail thanking the creator at the official website).
As usual, share your opinions or ask questions in the comments section, or in the forums.

Intended for remapping keys, mouse buttons and mouse wheel actions, Key Remapper allows you to:
*
Remap keys, mouse button presses and the mouse wheel rotation to different values and even to non-existing keys and mouse buttons. For example, you can replace CapsLock with “Middle mouse button”, F11 – by “Mouse wheel down”, F12 – by Win, Browser Home or “Mouse button X2” (which can be physically missing on your input devices). You can also try our more functional program — Key Manager. It allows you to remap combinations of keys and mouse buttons, sequences, and long presses (press and hold). You can display your actions in the form of pop-up menus that can be opened with hotkeys, record, edit, and execute macros, emulate mouse clicks, type and paste text, and much more.
*
Perform reverse remapping of keys and mouse buttons, i.e. virtually change their functions. For instance, you can virtually swap the Right Shift and Enter keys, the “Middle mouse button” and the Left Shift key.
*
Replace specific keys or mouse buttons by key or mouse button combinations with modifiers. For instance, you can replace the Browser Forward key (usually found on multimedia keyboards) by the Alt+Shift+Esc (quick switching between programs) combination, replace the X1 mouse button by the Ctrl+C (copy) combination, assign the Ctrl+”Left mouse button” combination to the right Alt key.
*
Emulate double mouse button and key presses and set the necessary interval between presses (double click with a delay).
*
Block (disable) keys, mouse buttons, the mouse wheel rotation and their combinations with various modifiers.
*
Restrict remapping and blocking to specific programs and windows. For instance, you can configure the software to allow the replacement of the X1 mouse button by Space only in program A and nowhere else. Another example would be: allow NumLock to be replaced by the Ctrl+C+C (double press of the “C” key) combination everywhere except for windows with the word “B” in their title.
*
Create and quickly (two clicks) switch between key sets.
The software does not alter the scan codes stored in the registry and does not require the system to be restarted in order to apply mapping changes.
You can use Key Remapper to remap virtually any keys and mouse buttons.Interface Languages: English, Deutsch, Español, Français, Italiano, Русский, 日本語System Requirements:Windows 10/8.1/8/7/Vista/2008/2003/XP/2000ScreenshotsGetting StartedDownloading and installing Key Remapper
To start working with the program, you need to download the installation file and launch it. The installation process will start. Once finished, the program is ready to be used. After the program is started, the window shown in the screenshot below will appear:Pc Key Mapper ToolWorking with the programThe top part of the screen is occupied by profiles management block followed by the main area, which allows you configure replacements and key blocks.Profiles
You will need different sets of keys for specific programs and purposes, that’s why the application features profiles that allow you to create configurable sets of key replacements and quickly switch between them. This mechanism works similarly to Windows ’sound schemes’. You can create (the ’Add new’ button ), rename (the ’Rename’ button ) and delete (the ’Delete’ button ) them.
When you create a profile, a new window prompts you for the profile name and asks whether you would like to fill the new profile with the data of the currently active one. Pc Controller Keymapper
You can switch between profiles using the dropdown list or by right clicking on the program icon in the taskbar and choosing the necessary profile from the context menu.Key or mouse button definition, replacement and blocking
In order to replace one key (or mouse button) by another, you need to define the key that will be physically pressed and the key that will be reported to the system as pressed:
To define a key replacement, double click the ’(double click to add)’ line. This operation can also be performed using the Insert key or the context menu:
The following window will appear:
When this window appears, the focus automatically goes to the definition of the key being pressed.
Press the necessary key or mouse button and select an action: replace it with another key (or a mouse button), a key combination or block.
If you need to define the new value of the key, set the cursor into the input field under the ’Replace by the following key or key combination:’ checkbox and press the necessary key, mouse button or key combination (press the main key while holding down the Alt, Ctrl, Shift and/or Win modifiers) or, if the necessary keys are missing on the keyboard, you can define them by choosing the main key from the list. If you need to define modifiers, check the boxes next to them. If you need to press a mouse button or turn the mouse wheel, select the necessary action starting from the word ’Mouse...’ in the dropdown list. For instance: ’Mouse Left Button’, ’Mouse Wheel Down’ and so forth.
If you need to block a key, select the ’Block’ checkbox. If the ’Full block’ checkbox is unchecked, single keypresses will be blocked, but keys won’t be blocked when pressed with modifiers (Ctrl, Shift, etc.). If it is checked, keys are blocked completely. For instance, if you block the ’A’ key and leave the ’Full block’ option unchecked, the Ctrl+A combination will work. If the option is enabled, the combination will have no effect.
Once you are finished, press ’OK’.
If the program is unpaused, key replacement will work.
If you need to swap keys, you will need to define two replacements.
Please note that you cannot assign two replacements or blocks to a single key. If it happens, only the top action from the list is performed. If one action is in a folder and the other one working with the same key is below it, the action in the folder will be performed.Working with replacements and blocks
The program allows you to store replacements and blocks in folders that can be created by the Ctrl+Insert key combination or in the context menu - ’Insert folder’.
You are also free to move actions and folders by dragging them with your mouse. If the Ctrl key is pressed when you start dragging, the action or the folder is copied. Habitual actions of cutting, copying, pasting and deleting are also supported.
If you need to temporarily disable a specific replacement or block (or even a whole folder of actions), you can use the space key or the ’Disable...’ item of the context menu. Repeat the operation to enable actions.Program hotkeysKeymapper For PcPc Key MapperCtrl+PPauseInsertInsert an action (replacement or block)Shift+InsertInsert a folderEnterAdd/modify a folder or an action depending on contextSpaceDisable/Enable an action or a folder (including the actions within)Ctrl+SpaceDisable all the actions of the folderShift+SpaceEnable all the actions of the folderCtrl+Shift+SpaceInvert the statuses of all actions of the folder (enables the disabled ones and vice versa)DeleteDelete a folder or an actionCtrl+DeleteDelete all folders and actions (clear the current profile)Shift+UpMove a folder or an action upShift+DownMove a folder or an action downCtrl+XCut an action or a folderCtrl+CCopy an action or a folderCtrl+VPaste an action or a folder
